The '''Republican Party''' is one of the two dominant political parties in the [[File:USA-icon.png]] [[United States of America]], with the other one being the [[File:DemocratsUSA-icon.png]] [[Democratic Party (USA)|Democratic Party]].

The party was founded as an anti-slavery party by those who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, as well as members within the [[File:WhigUSA-icon.png]] [[Whig Party]] and the [[File:FreeSoil-icon.png]] [[Free Soil Party]], in 1854.

The first Republican President, [[File:AbrahamLincoln-icon.png]] Abraham Lincoln, was elected in 1860, and following the war, the Republican Party began nominating American politics for most of its history until the Great Depression in the 1930s, attributed to Herbert Hoover.

Under [[File:Reagan-icon.png]] Ronald Reagan, the party shifted more conservative and right-wing, where it stands today.
