The African National Congress is a political party in South Africa. It is the dominant and current ruling party of the country since the first post-Apartheid elections in 1994.
The party was founded as the South African Native National Congress in the future capital city of Bloemfontein, aimed at promoting rights for native South Africans.
The party was banned in 1960 following the Sharpeville massacre, and it was unbanned nearly 3 decades later in 1990, when the former Apartheid government started to reform itself under F. W. de Klerk.
In 1994, the ANC under Nelson Mandela won a majority in the first post-Apartheid elections, winning more than 60% of the total votes.
