The African National Congress is a political party in
South Africa. It is the dominant and current ruling party of the country since the first post-Apartheid elections in 1994.
The party was founded as the South African Native National Congress in the future capital city of Bloemfontein, aimed at promoting rights for File:8-icon.png native South Africans.
The party was banned in 1960 following the Sharpeville massacre, and it was unbanned nearly 3 decades later in 1990, when the former File:OldSouthAfrica-icon.png Apartheid government started to reform itself under F. W. de Klerk.
In 1994, the ANC under Nelson Mandela won a majority in the first
post-Apartheid elections, winning more than 60% of the total votes.
