Canada is a country in North America. It is a member of the 
United Nations and is a federation consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Canada has a close relationship with 
United Kingdom as part of the Commonwealth.
History
The land now known as Canada has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, with distinct nations and cultures developing across the vast territory. It was first explored by Europeans under 
John Cabot in 1497 and later by 
Jacques Cartier in the 16th century.
Canada became a colony of the British Empire, with parts of the land under French control until the British took full control in 1763. Over the next century, Canada evolved into a self-governing entity, culminating in the passage of the British North America Act in 1867, which united several provinces into the Dominion of Canada.
Canada gradually gained independence from Britain throughout the 20th century, with full sovereignty confirmed in 1982 through the patriation of the Constitution, though it remains a member of the Commonwealth.
Political Parties
Canada has 5 major parties; parties that have one or more seats in the House of Commons. These parties consist of;
- Liberal Party of Canada/Parti libéral du Canada
- Conservative Party of Canada/Parti conservateur du Canada- File:BlocQuebecoisCA-icon.png - Bloc Québécois
- New Democratic Party/Nouveau Parti démocratique
- Green Party of Canada/Le Parti Vert du Canada
Although not in Parliament, many consider the File:PeoplesPartyCA-icon.png People's Party of Canada/Parti populaire du Canada to also be a major party.
As of the 2025 election, the current ruling party is the Liberal Party under the leadership of Mark Carney, holding a minority government.
