Canada is a country in North America. It is a member of the
United Nations and is a federation consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Canada has a close relationship with
United Kingdom as part of the Commonwealth.
History
The land now known as Canada has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, with distinct nations and cultures developing across the vast territory. It was first explored by Europeans under File:Italy-icon.png John Cabot in 1497 and later by File:France-icon.png Jacques Cartier in the 16th century.
Canada became a colony of the British Empire, with parts of the land under French control until the British took full control in 1763. Over the next century, Canada evolved into a self-governing entity, culminating in the passage of the British North America Act in 1867, which united several provinces into the Dominion of Canada.
Canada gradually gained independence from Britain throughout the 20th century, with full sovereignty confirmed in 1982 through the patriation of the Constitution, though it remains a member of the Commonwealth.
